The marvel of gollagen

The Art of Aging and Doing it Gracefully

Discover the functions of collagen and how to bio hack your productivity.

Collagen?

Collagen comes from the Greek word kólla, which means glue.  Collagen is a protein found in many parts of the body, including eyes, skin, hair, nails, blood vessels, organs, intestinal lining, blood vessels, muscle, bones, fat tissue, tendons and ligaments.  Collagen provides structure and support to connective tissues throughout the body.

Organs

Collagen allows the cohesion of the tissues and organs. It also provides protection, hydration, resistance, stability, structure, and flexibility properties.  It holds organs in place without friction and connects all body parts.  Collagen protects organs by preventing the absorption and spread of harmful substances, such as toxins, microorganisms, and cancerous cells.

Bones

Collagen is the main component of bone’s extracellular matrix, providing rigidity and resistance to stretching. This structure helps bones resist mechanical forces and fractures.  It provides structural support.  Collagen acts as a scaffold for bone cells, such as osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), osteoclasts (bone-resorbing cells), and osteocytes (mature bone cells).  Collagen plays a role in bone’s toughness, or ability to absorb energy.  It forms the organic matrix of bone, which provides the structural framework for mineralization.

Tendons, ligaments and joints

Collagen helps ligaments, tendons, and joints glide smoothly, which can reduce or prevent joint pain and act as an anti-inflammatory. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements may help improve joint stiffness and restore bone density in people with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

Skin

Fibroblasts play a vital role in skin health and function.  It produces and maintains the extracellular matrix (ECM), which provides structure and support to the skin’s tissues and attaches the top layer of the skin to itself.
Fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin.  Collagen prevents sagging skin, while elastin gives skin stretch and elasticity, allowing it to rebound after facial expressions.  Fibroblasts migrate to injury sites and release ECM components to help restore tissue, and participate in inflammatory responses.

In the intricate tapestry of skin health, fibroblasts emerge as unsung heroes, tirelessly weaving the essential fabric of collagen and elastin that grants our skin strength, resilience, and vitality. These remarkable cells not only contribute to the structural integrity of our skin but also engage in a harmonious dance with the immune system, responding to challenges, wound healing, and maintaining the delicate balance of our skin’s ecosystem.   Fibroblasts facilitate a symphony of cellular generation, differentiation, migration, and communication.

As we age, our body’s collagen production diminishes, and the structure of our cells becomes more fragile. Starting in our mid-twenties, we experience an annual decline of about 1%. After menopause begins, there is a significant reduction of roughly 30% in collagen over the following five years, a change that often leads individuals to feel as though they have aged rapidly. After this period, collagen loss continues at a rate of 2% each year. The effects of diminished collagen include thinner skin that is more susceptible to damage and bruising, prolonged healing times for skin, bones, and organs, and an increased likelihood of scarring. Additionally, hair can appear dull, skin may sag and develop wrinkles, tendons and ligaments lose elasticity, and joints may become stiffer.

How to boost your collagen production.

Most collagen supplements do not work.  The FDA doesn’t regulate collagen supplements, so companies that make them don’t have to prove that they work or are safe.  In my experience, most collagen supplements irritate the digestive tract and stimulate candida.  The only collagen supplement I recommend is Regenerate from Osmosis.

Skin creams with synthetic collagen do not add collagen protein to your skin.  Collagen is too big of a molecule to penetrate through the skin.  In addition, collagen needs to be digested, and the skin does not digest compounds. They add a protective barrier to your skin and prevent water loss, but creams don’t raise the amount of collagen in your skin.

You can help your body make more collagen by eating healthy foods. To make it, your body puts together amino acids called glycine and proline. You find these acids in high-protein foods such as chicken, fish, beef, eggs, organ meats, berries, leafy greens, dairy, nuts, seeds, and beans. Other nutrients, like vitamin C, zinc, and copper, also play a part.

Bone broth has received much of a hype lately.  It is for many reasons.   Bone broth is good sources for the proteins that help build collagen.  In addition, it improves gut health, immunity, digestion, sleep, and inflammation which can cause pain and respiratory infections.

You can buy bone broth in grocery stores or make your own. When you drink bone broth, your body breaks it down into amino acids that help build tissue.

Don’t be a scurvy pirate!  Vitamin C is crucial to the formation of collagen.  Pirates, which lived most of the time in ships, and didn’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables; suffered from scurvy.  Scurvy is a disease caused by the lack of vitamin C.  This lack of proper collagen formation, is depicted as pirates’ missing limbs and defective eyes.  Defective collagen formation causes damage to blood vessels, bones, cartilage, and hair, and can lead to hemorrhaging in any organ.

Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for collagen synthesis, and the body can’t form collagen without it.  Vitamin C is a catalyst in helping the body maintain collagen and encourage new collagen growth in the skin, and everywhere else. It also aids in all phases of wound healing.

Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C:

  • citrus fruit
  • peppers
  • strawberries
  • blackcurrants
  • broccoli
  • brussels sprouts
  • potatoes
